Week of 10/24/16

THIS WEEK

Students will take three major tests this week:

  • Math test is Friday, 10/28, and it is just like the others that have been given.  Students have the list of lessons covered in the math section of their binders.  Please look for this list each time a test is announced as this is the best way to help your child prepare.
  • Science test is Thursday, 10/27.  It will cover Unit 3, Lessons 1 and 2.  Students were given the graded quizzes with notes/handouts attached to take home.  Please use this information as well as the information in the book to help them prepare.  As mentioned at the beginning of the school year, science is taught conceptually.  It is not merely memorization but application of the concepts covered.  The multiple choice questions are great examples of what students can expect on the test.  It will be mostly multiple choice with a few short answer.  It is important for students to know the stages of Complete Metamorphosis (ELPA - egg, larva, pupa, adult) and Incomplete Metamorphosis (ENA - egg, nymph, adult) as well as examples of organisms that undergo each.
  • Spelling test is also Thursday.  This is a review of words previously learned.  The format will be multiple choice.  They will be given sentences and will choose the correct spelling from a list given for each sentence.  This is very similar to the format that is used on the achievement test in the spring.  This will give them practice for this format.

Other important information:

  • We have completed the reading of The Ballad of Mulan, and we have watched the movie.  Students will now compare the two using a Venn Diagram, and they will begin writing a rough draft using their comparisons.  Students will be given instructions, specific guidelines to follow, and a grading rubric.  The writing will be done in class, however, students may bring the rough draft home at the appropriate time for parents to review.
  • Report cards go home Thursday, 10/27.  I have several students who have past due library books.  Students with past due library books will not receive report cards until their account is cleared.  Tuesday is our weekly library day.  Please be sure your child brings his/her library books to school to recheck or return to be sure there is not a problem in receiving his/her report card.
  • Monday, 10/31 is Halloween.  Students will not dress in costumes that day, and we will not have a party so to speak.  However, if you wish to send a treat bag/goody, I will be glad to allow students to pass them out.  I will bring them a treat that can be enjoyed during our snack time.  It will likely be some type of fruit.  If your child is allergic or does not eat fruit, please let me know.
  • Third grade is contributing an Oyster Roast gift basket which includes a gift certificate for local oysters, 2 oyster knives, 2 silicone grippers, hot sauce, and Saltines to the THA Booster Club's silent auction.  We are asking each student to contribute $4 towards the certificates and would appreciate you sending the money by this Friday.
